독일 헤비메탈의 자존심 스콜피온스는 특유의 서정적이고 고혹적인 멜로디로 많은 사랑을 받은 록 그룹이다.

 

보컬리스트 클라우스 마이네의 애절하고 스산한 창법을 주무기로 내세운 이들은 아시아권에서 폭발적인 지지를 획득했다. 무엇보다도 '선율'에 역점을 두는 이들의 드라마틱한 음악 세계는 동양인들의 감성을 뒤흔들기에 적합했다. 특히 1990년 이후 여섯 차례나 방문한 한국에서 이들의 인기는 절대적이었다.

 

강성(强性) 음악에 쉽사리 끌리지 않는 사람들조차 달콤하고 귀에 쏙쏙 감기는 이들의 선율에는 마음을 허락했다. 대부분의 국내 팬들은 엽기 가수 이재수가 불러 다시 히트한 'Still loving you'를 비롯해, 'Holiday', 'Always somewhere', 'Wind of change' 등을 열심히 듣고 따라 불렀다. 이 곡들은 라디오에서도 가장 많이 나오는 그룹의 인기 레퍼토리들이었다. 하지만 초, 중반기 스콜피온스의 음악 세계는 통념과는 분명히 선을 달리했다.

 

1969년 독일 하노버에서 기타리스트 루돌프 솅커의 주도 아래 칼 하인츠 폴머, 로타르 하임베르크, 볼프강 지오니를 라인업으로 결성된 그룹은 지미 헨드릭스가 일구었던 미국 사이키델릭의 숨결을 그대로 받아들여 약물 냄새로 찌든 록 음악을 추구했다.
